How to Repair Scratched Wheel Rims

Steps to Repairing Your Scratched Wheel Rims

Clean the Wheel Rims

Before you can repair the scratches on your wheel rims, make sure to clean them thoroughly. This step is crucial to remove any dirt or debris that might get trapped in the scratches during the repair. Use an appropriate wheel cleaner product or a mix of mild soap and water to remove fine brake dust, grease, and grime on the surface.

Pay extra attention to the damaged areas, as dirt trapped in the scratches will make the repair harder and may worsen the appearance of the damage. The best way to scrub the wheel rims clean without adding more scratches is with a soft bristle brush or sponge. Rinse the rim well with water, and dry it completely using a microfiber towel.

Sometimes, cleaning alone can make shallow scratches less noticeable. But if the damage is still obvious, it’s time to move on to fine sanding.

Lightly Sand the Scratched Area

When the rim is clean and completely dry, it’s time to lightly sand the scratched area. Use fine-grit sandpaper, such as 800 grit, and gently work on the scratches in a circular motion. This will help even out the damage and prep the area for the next steps. To protect the tyre during this process, cover the edges with wide tape.

Fill in the Scratches

After gently sanding, you may need to fill in the scratches to make the surface even. If the scratch or chip is deep, you’ll need an appropriate wheel rim repair kit with filler material. Use an applicator or putty knife to spread the filler evenly over the scratched section and blend it carefully with the rest of the surface.

Let the filler dry completely, following the instructions provided with the product. It usually takes a few hours. This drying time is essential for a strong and durable repair that can be polished or sanded later without issue. Gently sand the filled area until it’s flush with the rest of the wheel rim.

Buff and Polish the Rim

After filling the scratches and sanding, the rim should feel smooth. To polish the surface of your wheel rims, use a polishing compound and a soft cloth, working gently over the repaired area in a circular motion. This will help remove any minor imperfections left after sanding and give the rim a shiny, even finish. The goal is to repair the damaged areas so that they blend seamlessly with the rest of the wheel rim.

Apply a Protective Clear Coat

To finish your wheel rim repair, you’ll need to apply a clear coat to act as a protective barrier for the repaired area. Wearing a mask, spray the clear coat in an even, thin layer, holding the can about 8–10 inches from the rim to avoid creating drips. Once the first coat has dried (check product instructions for drying time), add a second layer for extra durability and protection.

Wait until the clear coat is completely dry before handling the rim or driving. This step not only protects your repair but also gives the rim a professional finish that will last longer.
